Here are a few guidelines to help you enjoy your candle safely:-

-Position candles away from curtains and other flammable materials.

-Don't burn candles underneath anything –for example shelves.

-Always place candles on a heat resistant surface or in a steady candleholder that will not burn. Be especially careful with night lights and tea lights, which get hot enough to melt plastic.

-When lighting a pillar or ball candle, make sure it burns for long enough to create a ‘pool’ right to the edge before extinguishing for the first time. This may take many hours with a wide candle.
If it is only allowed to burn for a short time it will burn downwards not outwards and burning time will be reduced.

-Candles need to be monitored and tended to. Turn the candle occasionally to ensure even burning and keep away from draughts or other heat sources. Every so often extinguish the candle and trim the wick as detailed below

- Trim wick down to maximum of 1cm to avoid a sooty smoke. If the candle is smoking with a large flame then the wick is too long and needs trimming. If the flame is low and weak the wick is too short. Extinguish the flame and pour away the extra wax.

-Use non drip candles if possible and never leave near an open window or door. Candles and drafts are not a good combination!

-Candles should be out of reach of children and pets at all times.

-Leave a gap between two burning candles, ideally 10cm.

-Never leave candles burning unattended-always extinguish them before leaving the room and never leave a burning candle or oil burner in a child’s bedroom.

-Follow these common sense rules and you will get the very best results from your candles.
